Our Teachers

All of our teachers are passionate about music. We are dedicated to supporting the natural development of children using the language of music and movement.

We create a fun, informal, setting that spurs musical engagement and supports each child.

We take advantage of the rich diversity on our staff to strengthen our understanding of this work through ongoing workshops and trainings. We are a musical learning community that likes to make Music Together® too.

photo Susan Freese

Susan began her musical life as a child. She grew up in a large Canadian family. Her earliest memories are of sing-a-longs among her sixty plus cousins, aunts, uncles and extended family surrounding an upright piano in a tiny little farm house. She attended performing arts high school and went on to minor in music education in college while earning her degrees in psychology and education. As an elementary and middle school teacher Susan always found a way to integrate music into her teaching and every day life. When Susan had her first daughter Olivia in 2010 she began Music Together Classes. She saw how special the program was for her whole family. &S220; We know we wanted to raise our children in a music rich environment like I was lucky enough to grow up in. Our life is a musical and we wouldn't have it any other way!&S221; Susan began her Music Together teacher training in 2011 and is now very excited to join our team. Along the way, baby Avery joined the family. Susan also teaches Music Together in West Hartford and will soon be offering sign language courses for families with young children....stay tuned!

photo Jenny

Jenny Shieh grew up playing the piano, but her love has always been singing. She sang and danced in choirs and musicals and then moved to New York City for college where she took voice lessons and performed in an a cappella group. After college, she earned a master’s degree in elementary education and became a fifth grade teacher in Philadelphia.

Jenny brought her son to Music Together classes when he was a few months old and they quickly fell in love with the program and its philosophy. Two years later, after her daughter was born, Jenny brought both children to classes and appreciated the positive impact it had on all of them.  Music Together has enriched their lives through more than just music and movement; it has become a part of their lifestyle and it has introduced them to a wonderful community of friends.

Jenny is excited to combine her teaching background with her passion for music. She enjoys playing the guitar and singing with her children and her husband, Paul.

photo Barbara Gene

Barbara Gene has been a music lover since birth.  Growing up, her family attended a lively Gospel Church and it was there that she was introduced to the undeniable heart and soul of music. She grew up making music with her brothers and sister and could be found practicing on her keyboard piano while her brothers played the drum and guitar and sister on the tambourine.  She was always wanting to help children and be around them.  When she became a nanny, she was introduced to Music Together and loved the community it gathered.  For 15 years she had been visiting Music Together on and off again with new families she worked for, singing the songs and helping to bring music and joy to each of their lives.  She studied early childhood education yet hadn't found a program she connected with.  Once she became a mother of her own, naturally she introduced Music Together to her baby, yet it was a whole different experience for her.  With this new excitement and love for children, she felt it would be fitting to join the Music Together team.  Barbara Gene loves to play the ukulele and guitar
